Computer Game Advantages
While computer and video games have received a lot of press recently for the belief by many that they lead to aggressive tendencies and possibly even increased violence, the one fact that we do not frequently hear is that computer games are being used to provide numerous helpful benefits. Researchers are finding that computer games can actually be tweaked to treat a variety of disorders and disabilities.
One of the unique ways that computer games are being used is to treat people with phobias. The belief behind this treatment method is that exposing people to the source of their fear within a controlled environment may actually lead to a cure. When compared to other forms of treatment, computer games are an affordable option. Other forms of treatment can easily cost thousands of dollars while a computer game can be purchased for usually under a hundred bucks.
Another advantage to computer game related therapy is that researchers are finding they can easily adapt games to suit an individual’s specific fears in order to create a customized treatment plan. Two of the most common phobias that have been treated with computer games are a fear of confined spaces and heights.
Computer games are also being used to treat various learning and language disabilities. Teachers have found that games specifically geared for these types of problems provide a fun, unique and interesting way for children to overcome their disabilities. Games have been tested at several universities in an effort to understand how computer-generated speech can help children recognize and repeat desired language patterns.
This has proven to be extremely important, since as many as seven million children in the United States have been diagnosed with learning impairments that are associated with language development problems. Typically, one of the most common problems found with children experiencing such disabilities is the fact that their brains can’t process sounds quickly enough. Computer games designed for language disability treatment actually force a child’s brain to concentrate on the desired language patterns, so that they can understand and process the individual differences.
